The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology was established in 1892 as part of the University College London museums. The museum houses a collection of over 80,000 items, making it one of the world’s leading collections of Egyptian and Sudanese archaeological artifacts. Its holdings rank third globally in both quantity and quality, surpassed only by those of the Cairo Museum, the British Museum, and the Egyptian Museum in Berlin.

Originally founded as a teaching resource for the Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies department at University College London, the museum has since grown into a large-scale institution that attracts many visitors each year.

Many items in the collection hold “first” titles, including an early piece of linen from Egypt dating back to around 5000 BCE, two stone lions from 3000 BCE, fragments of a calendar from 2900 BCE, the earliest known metal objects in Egypt — finished iron beads, the earliest glassware, Egyptian “sealed cylinders” from 3500 BCE, the oldest will written on papyrus, the oldest gynecological papyrus, the only known veterinary papyrus from ancient Egypt, and the largest surviving temple architectural drawing from around 1300 BCE. In addition, the collection includes artifacts from the Coptic and Islamic periods, as well as ancient clothing and crafts.
