Westerkerk
Introduction Westerkerk is located near the Westermarkt (West Market), and its tower is an iconic symbol of Amsterdam. From the top of this 50-meter-high tower, you can enjoy a beautiful and historically rich panoramic view of the old city.
17th-century Dutch maps and nautical charts used the church’s north-south axis as the zero meridian (it wasn’t until 1884 that the Greenwich meridian was recognized by all countries). Rembrandt died in 1669 near the nearby Rozengracht canal and was buried in the paupers' grave beneath the church's choir. Lucas Bols, the Netherlands’ most famous gin distiller, is also buried here. No other building has been so emotionally celebrated, except for this tower, which remains forever in the hearts of the people of Amsterdam.
