Netherlands Maritime Museum

The Netherlands Maritime Museum was originally a naval warehouse established in 1656. The museum moved into the warehouse in 1973, located in the once-majestic harbor district of Oostenburg. The Netherlands Maritime Museum is dedicated to promoting Dutch maritime history and houses nearly all significant artifacts from the country’s shipping history. Here, visitors can gain a comprehensive understanding of the Dutch Age of Sail, featuring a wide range of items including paintings, scale models, weapons, and world maps. The artworks depict impressive naval battles commanded by Dutch naval officers.

At the Netherlands Maritime Museum, visitors can admire ship models, components from old vessels, tools and machinery used on ships, as well as historically valuable nautical charts and globes. A must-see here is the replica of a Dutch East India Company sailing ship — the "Amsterdam." This ship sailed between the Netherlands and the East Indies in the 18th century. The current replica was built between 1985 and 1990, with the deck recreating the daily life of sailors in the past. Even more engaging is the multimedia theater, where the film "Sailing to Bantam" is screened.
