Blue Bridge

The Blue Bridge is located in Amsterdam, connecting Waterloo Square and Rembrandt Square. It gets its name from the original bridge built here in 1600, which no longer exists. When it was first constructed, the bridge was painted blue to match the colors of the Dutch flag, hence the name "Blue Bridge." The new bridge built in 1883 replaced the original wooden Blue Bridge, but the name has been preserved.

Modeled after Paris’s Pont Alexandre III, the Blue Bridge spans the Amstel River at the point where Amsterdam’s only natural river flows into the historic city center. Replacing the original wooden bridge, it is a grand stone structure. The Blue Bridge features three arches to allow boats to pass beneath. Decorated with spaced-out, crown-shaped street lamps — with crowns also atop the lamp posts — the bridge exudes an air of elegance and grandeur.
