The Concertgebouw Amsterdam opened in 1888 with a concert featuring a 120-piece symphony orchestra and a 500-voice choir performing works by Wagner, Handel, Bach, and Beethoven in a grand display. It is a world-class concert hall that has received widespread acclaim, renowned for having one of the best acoustics in the world. Alongside Boston Symphony Hall and Vienna’s Golden Hall, it is considered one of the top three concert venues globally.

The inspiration for the design of the Concertgebouw came from Leipzig’s Neue Gewandhaus — grand and magnificent, it rises up from a grassy field. The concert hall is a classic example of European classical architecture, featuring white reliefs under the eaves, Ionic columns on the arched entrances, and varied window designs, all exquisitely detailed. The main concert hall is 44 meters long, 28 meters wide, and 17 meters high, making it highly suitable for chamber music and art song performances, with a capacity of 2,037 spectators. Adjacent to the main hall is a smaller hall, also ideal for chamber music and art songs, seating 478 people. Many world-renowned musicians, conductors, and orchestras have performed in this world-class venue.

Around 900 concerts are held at the Concertgebouw each year, attracting over 800,000 visitors, making it the second most-attended concert hall in the world, following Rome’s Auditorium Parco della Musica, which hosts over one million attendees.
