Jewish Historical Museum

The Jewish Historical Museum is located in Amsterdam and opened in 1932. It is dedicated to the study of Jewish history, culture, and religion in the Netherlands and around the world, serving as the only museum in the Netherlands focused on the history of the Jewish people. It gained international recognition in 1989.

The building that houses the Jewish Historical Museum was formerly an old Ashkenazi synagogue. The museum’s collection includes around 11,000 items, divided into three categories: artworks, ritual objects, and historical artifacts. There are two permanent exhibitions and several temporary ones. The permanent exhibitions cover various aspects of the past and present of the Jewish community in the Netherlands, with a central theme focusing on the religion, culture, and history of Dutch Jews. The first floor of the museum showcases the history, traditions, and clothing of Jews, primarily from the period between 1600 and 1890. This allows visitors to gain a clear understanding of how Jews came to the Netherlands, how they interacted with non-Jewish communities, their living conditions and environment in the country, as well as debates surrounding their identity. The museum’s collection of ritual objects was originally used in synagogues, mainly to allow visitors to experience the solemn atmosphere of the synagogue during that time.
