Bible Museum

The Bible Museum is located near the Herengracht in Amsterdam. Established in 1852, it boasts a history of over 160 years. Housed in a neoclassical-style building, the museum primarily collects Bibles and other religious items related to Christianity.

The Bible Museum possesses the oldest Bible in the Netherlands, dating back to 1477, as well as the Dutch States Translation of the Bible from 1637. It also features one of the scrolls of the Dead Sea Scrolls discovered in the 1940s — the Book of Isaiah from the Qumran community — which holds significant historical value. In addition to Christian-related artifacts, the museum showcases archaeological objects and handicrafts from ancient Egypt, such as oil lamps, clay tablets, pottery, and coins, offering insights into the religious life of ancient Egyptians. Replicas of Jewish synagogues are also on display, including models of Solomon’s Temple and the Second Temple, all crafted using precious materials.

The Bible Museum is open from 10:00 to 17:00 from Monday to Saturday, and from 11:00 to 17:00 on Sundays and public holidays. It remains open year-round except for New Year’s Day and Queen’s Day on April 30th each year.
