Ferrara is located in the northeastern part of Italy’s Emilia region, between Bologna and Padua. It lies in the lower valley of the Po River, upstream from the vast Po Delta. Founded between the 6th and 7th centuries BC, Ferrara has historically been a center of culture and art and is now the capital of the Province of Ferrara.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, Ferrara attracted a host of Renaissance talents and masters. In this city, Piero della Francesca, Jacopo Bellini, and Andrea Mantegna adorned the palaces of the House of Este. The “ideal city” concept rooted in humanist ideals also became a reality here: starting in 1492, Biagio Rossetti, following new principles of urban planning, built an “ideal city” around the Este palaces.

Ferrara is a quintessential example of a Renaissance city, with its architectural heritage remarkably well-preserved. The evolution of urban design showcased in Ferrara has had a profound influence on city planning for centuries to come.
