Located between the Po River and the Apennine Mountains in northern Italy, Bologna is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region and one of the most developed cities in the country. Frequently listed among the Italian cities with the highest quality of life, it is a dynamic and international university hub, boasting a wealth of history, art, cuisine, music, and culture. It was also designated the European Capital of Culture in 2000.

Over the centuries, Bologna has earned many nicknames, including the "Learned City" and the "Fat City." The former stems from its prestigious universities, while the latter refers to its abundant culinary delights. Until the 16th century, theater was a wildly popular form of entertainment in Bologna. The city’s first public theater, Teatro alla Scala (not to be confused with Milan's), has been in operation since 1547 and remains a favorite among global visitors. Bologna’s iconic landmark is the Basilica di San Petronio, one of the largest churches in the world and a must-visit site. Other notable attractions include the Bologna Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Pietro), Basilica di Santo Stefano, Basilica di San Domenico, Church of San Francesco, Basilica della Beata Vergine di San Luca, and Basilica di San Giacomo Maggiore.

Bologna is home to numerous renowned traditional dishes, with the famous ragù (meat sauce) originating here. Nestled in the fertile Po Valley, the city’s rich gastronomy is largely defined by its local meats and cheeses. Staples of the region include lasagna, tortellini, and traditional Bolognese sausage.
