Ferrara

Ferrara is the capital of the Province of Ferrara in the Emilia-Romagna region of northeastern Italy, located in the lower Po Valley, about 50 km northeast of Bologna. The University of Ferrara is situated here. Additionally, Ferrara is a city of great historical charm.

Surrounded by more than 9 kilometers of ancient city walls and featuring well-preserved urban architecture, Ferrara is a prime example of a Renaissance city. The most spectacular site in the city center is Castello Estense. Built in 1385, it consists of towers, a moat, drawbridges, and defensive walls, and served as the main residence of the Este family. Palazzo dei Diamanti, named for its marble facade that glistens like diamonds in the sunlight, now houses the National Gallery of Art, which features works by masters of the Ferrara School. Not to be missed are Palazzo Schifanoia, built in 1385, the Cathedral, the Ferrara Synagogue and Jewish Museum, churches of various architectural styles, and the University Botanical Garden.
