New Town

Introduction

The New Town was built in 1279 during the reign of the Angevin dynasty in France by Charles I. The four cylindrical towers on the city walls and the surrounding moat are typical features of French-style castles. At the castle entrance stands a triumphal arch commemorating the entry of Alfonso I into the city, built in 1467, featuring reliefs that praise his family. It is regarded as a masterpiece representing the transition from Gothic to Renaissance style. Currently, the castle houses a small museum that displays oil paintings depicting the history of Naples.  Transportation  It is a 7-minute walk from the Royal Palace or you can take bus R2 from Central Station and get off at Piazza Munaciello. Admission: €5. Opening hours: 9am–7pm, ticket sales stop one hour before closing. Closed on Sundays.
