Sulfur-Spouting Crater
Introduction The Sulfur-Spouting Crater is located in the remote Pozzuoli suburb to the southwest of Naples. The entire crater consists of a layer of rock supported by subterranean steam pressure. The Romans believed this to be the home of the god of fire. It only gained fame in the 20th century, with the volcano’s pungent steam, sulfur-rich water, and mineral-rich mud believed to be beneficial for health.
