Naples is located in the Campania region of Italy, 185 kilometres southwest of Rome, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius in the central part of the volcanic area at the rear of the Bay of Naples, beyond a series of islands and archipelagos that open to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Throughout its long history, Naples' defensive structures have been continuously expanded, reinforced, and updated, and in some places, the original city walls are still visible. Since ancient times, many features have largely been preserved, and today they form a series of districts that cut vertically across the slopes, together with intersecting roads.

The city’s religious and secular buildings reflect the succession of various architectural styles, including Romanesque, conservative Gothic, Catalan, Tuscan, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Neoclassical. The city's structure is densely packed with richly decorated religious buildings. Naples is one of the oldest cities in Europe, and its current urban architecture retains elements from its long and eventful history. The layout of its streets, the numerous historic buildings, and its location on the Bay of Naples give it unique universal value.
