Introduction The Church of Santa Croce faces Florence’s oldest square, and the space formed by its adjacent monastery courtyard and the Pazzi Chapel, built by Brunelleschi, is regarded as a quintessence of Florentine Renaissance architecture.

The church contains the tombs of 276 great figures, including Dante, Galileo, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, and Rossini. Its interior decorations were created by numerous artists, among which the most famous include Donatello’s gilded relief “Annunciation” on the fifth pillar on the right side of the corridor, Giotto’s fresco “Life of St. Francis” (La Vita di San Francesco) in the Bardi Chapel of the nave, and Donatello’s “Crucifix” (Crocifisso) in the left aisle.
