Introduction Palazzo Medici Riccardi was the residence of the Medici family. Its utterly undecorated exterior stands in stark contrast to the immense wealth of the Medici family at the time, appearing incredibly plain.

In the early 15th century, Florence practiced a primitive form of democracy, where the ruling party often confiscated the wealth of the defeated and exiled them. Cosimo de' Medici, who controlled the greatest wealth in Europe, was also once exiled. It is said that when he became the de facto ruler of Florence, he deeply understood that the hatred of the citizens was more fearsome than anything else, so he designed this modest palace. From 1460 for about 100 years, it served as the residence of the Medici family.
