Palazzo Vecchio

Introduction Palazzo Vecchio was the former town hall of the Republic of Florence, with the building’s entrance adorned with decorations featuring the city’s emblem.

Michelangelo’s famous sculpture “David” was originally placed outside Palazzo Vecchio but was later moved to the Galleria dell’Accademia, and a replica now stands in its original location.

The 16th-century Hall of the Five Hundred (Salone dei Cinquecento) on the second floor of the building was once the meeting hall of the Republic of Florence and is decorated with paintings by the school of Vasari. The 13th-century Hall of the Two Hundred (Salone dei Duecento) on the third floor features exquisite ceiling frescoes and tapestries incorporating a map of Florence at the time (woven in the 16th century), both of great artistic value.
