Introduction

Climbing up the ramp from the Marina Gate, you first arrive at the Temple of Apollo Central Square, also known as the Forum. This was once the political, economic, and religious center of ancient Pompeii. The Basilica on the square still retains some brick bases of its columns, which used to be a courthouse and commercial trading site. Opposite the Basilica is the Temple of Apollo (Tempio di Apollo), where 48 well-preserved Corinthian columns and many exquisite frescoes can be seen. On the north side of the square stands the Temple of Jupiter (Tempio di Jupiter), which faces away from Mount Vesuvius. From here, you can clearly view Mount Vesuvius, making it one of the key highlights of the tour.
