House of the Vettii

　 Introduction

The House of the Vettii is a typical residence of a wealthy merchant, featuring an atrium surrounded by a colonnaded peristyle and exquisite carvings. The image at the entrance is the most famous — in fact, it was an amulet used for warding off evil spirits at the time.

The yellow walls of the living room still preserve many mysterious and intricate frescoes, including one depicting "Hercules entangled by a giant serpent" and others known as "Pompeian Red," which portray scenes from the daily life of the god of love. These frescoes are reddish-brown wet paintings, and it is said that even contemporary technology cannot reproduce this color.
