Palazzo Pitti

Introduction A typical Florentine Renaissance building, this was the palace of the Medici family. Construction began in 1457 by the Florentine merchant Pitti, after whom it is named. It was purchased by Cosimo de' Medici in 1465 and redesigned by Brunelleschi. Between 1764 and 1783, side wings were added, resulting in the structure seen today.

The interior of the palace is decorated in the classic Baroque style of the 17th–18th centuries and includes the Palatine Gallery, the Silver Museum, the Gallery of Modern Art, the Costume Gallery, the Porcelain Museum, and the Royal Apartments, collectively known as the Palazzo Pitti Museums. The collections feature artworks and treasures owned by the Medici family, including 11 works by Raphael.

The Boboli Gardens behind Palazzo Pitti is a tranquil and elegant garden. The palace is connected to the Uffizi Gallery across the Arno River via the Vasari Corridor. Both the gardens and the corridor were built in 1565. Ticket/Opening Hours Opening Hours: Weekdays 8:30–19:00, Sundays and holidays 8:30–14:00, closed on Mondays. Ticket: €8.5.
