The Historic Centre of Florence is situated in Tuscany in central Italy, nestled at the foot of the Apennine Mountains and among the hills of the Arno River basin. Founded on the site of an Etruscan settlement, Florence—as a symbol of the Renaissance—began to display its economic and cultural supremacy during the 15th and 16th centuries under the Medici family.
