Boboli Gardens

The Italian Boboli Gardens are a world-renowned ancient Roman horticultural garden. In the early 14th century, the Boboli Gardens were the private courtyard of the Medici family, the most prominent nobles in Florence. During festivals, the Medici family would host grand musical parties in the gardens. Being invited to a Boboli party to enjoy performances by royal musicians and taste delicacies prepared by the imperial chefs was considered an honorable symbol of status at the time.

In 1550, Cosimo I de' Medici and his wife Eleonora di Toledo purchased the Pitti Palace from the Pitti family and commissioned the famous designer Tribolo to begin expanding the palace and designing the garden — including over 320,000 square meters of slopes and hills. Unlike many symmetrical European gardens, the Boboli Gardens were arranged naturally along the contours of the hillside, with carefully placed paths and fountains among the woods, offering a strong sense of natural charm. Visitors here do not feel constrained by overly manicured surroundings. The courtyard at the top of the hill offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the city of Florence, with the red dome of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore standing out prominently. Since their creation by the Medici family and design by Tribolo, the Boboli Gardens have gained fame as a classic masterpiece of Italian garden design.
