Statue of David

The Statue of David was carved by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504 during the Renaissance to depict the biblical King David at the moment he prepares to face the giant Goliath. The entire statue was sculpted from a single block of pure white marble, stands 4.342 meters tall, and weighs over 5,000 kilograms. The original has been housed in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, Italy since 1873, while two replicas are displayed in the center of Piazza Michelangelo and in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria.

Legend has it that the original block of marble used for the statue was quarried in the Carrara Mountains in the Alps. It was initially entrusted to another sculptor, but the artist found the stone too hard, dense, and smooth, fearing his skill was inadequate to do it justice and might ruin the precious material. It was then passed on to Michelangelo. The 26-year-old Michelangelo began working on the “David” sculpture, meticulously studying skin texture, blood vessels, and joints, and finally completed it when he was 30. Previous artists often focused on the moment David beheads Goliath and claims victory; however, Michelangelo’s version emphasizes David’s facial expression and body posture — his furrowed brows, intense gaze fixed straight ahead, and visible veins, perfectly capturing an image of idealized “athletic beauty.”

On September 8, 1504, the Statue of David was first unveiled in Florence and hailed as a masterpiece of classical art. The original housed in the Galleria dell'Accademia attracts approximately 1.2 million visitors each year.
