Pitti Palace

Pitti Palace is a grand Renaissance-era palace located on the southern bank of the Arno River in Florence, just a short distance from the Ponte Vecchio. Originally built in 1458 as the residence of Florentine banker Luca Pitti, the palace was purchased by the Medici family in 1539 and served as the principal residence of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. Later, in the late 18th century, it became the center of power for Napoleon Bonaparte, and the newly unified Italian royal family also briefly resided here. In 1919, King Victor Emmanuel III donated the palace and its collections to the Italian people, and it now stands as Florence’s largest art gallery, open to the public.

Today, as an art museum, Pitti Palace primarily consists of the Silver Museum, Porcelain Museum, Costume Gallery, Carriage Museum, Galleria d’Arte Moderna, and the Boboli Gardens. While visiting these galleries, you can also admire the centuries-old preserved original features and the magnificent palace itself. The Palatine Gallery, housed within Pitti Palace, contains a collection of artistic masterpieces amassed by the Medici family over generations, including works by Raphael, Botticelli, and Titian, displayed across eleven salons—five of which feature magnificent frescoed ceilings that depict allegories related to the Medici family. Masterpieces such as Raphael’s “Madonna of the Chair” and “Lady with a Veil,” both created during the height of the Renaissance, are also part of the collection.
