Loggia del Bigallo

The Loggia del Bigallo is situated on the Piazza del Duomo in the Italian city of Florence, at the corner of Piazza San Giovanni and Via Calzaiuoli. It is a highly eye-catching piece of late Gothic architecture and among the most famous public loggias in Florence. Designed by Alberto Arnoldi, the Loggia del Bigallo was constructed between 1352 and 1358. In 1425, it became a shelter for lost children and abandoned infants. The loggia’s two arch-shaped brackets are adorned with rich reliefs, including prophets, angels, virtues, the Christ blessing, and “Ecce Homo,” all of which are quite beautiful. In 1697, the loggia’s arches were enclosed to provide more space for public speeches, and the masonry was removed in 1889, revealing long-hidden decorations. The upper floor originally featured elaborate frescoes and three tabernacles, with paintings depicting the Madonna and Child, Saint Lucy, and Saint Peter the Martyr. Inside the loggia, there is also a museum dedicated to the Compagnia della Misericordia.
