Piazza della Signoria

Piazza della Signoria is located in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy. It is an L-shaped square named after the Palazzo Vecchio (Signoria Palace). As one of the most historically significant squares in Florence, it has been the focal point of the origins and history of the Florentine Republic and continues to be known as the political center of the city.

During the Roman era, this area was already a central square, surrounded by theaters, baths, and dye workshops. Later, a large church was built here, and Piazza della Signoria took shape in 1268 when the victorious Guelphs demolished the homes of the Ghibellines. The square remained dilapidated and disorderly for a long time until it was first paved in 1385. In 1497, Savonarola and his followers held the famous Bonfire of the Vanities in this square, burning piles of books, gambling tools, and more. During the repaving work in the 1980s, archaeological treasures were discovered underground, including even Neolithic-era remains.

Piazza della Signoria is a gathering place for both locals and numerous visitors. Today, the impressive 14th-century Palazzo Vecchio and its crenellated tower still dominate the square. In addition to the Palazzo Vecchio, the square is also home to notable structures such as the Loggia dei Lanzi, the Uffizi Gallery, the Tribunal of Merchants, and the Palazzo Uguccioni.
