Fountain of Neptune

The Fountain of Neptune is located in Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy, in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. Commissioned in 1565, it was created by sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati and his assistants.

The Fountain of Neptune was commissioned in 1565 to celebrate the wedding of Francesco I de' Medici and Joanna of Austria. At its center stands a statue of the sea god Neptune, erected on a tall pedestal in the middle of an octagonal basin, which is decorated with mythological figures bound in chains. Neptune’s face closely resembles that of Cosimo I, symbolizing Florence’s maritime dominance. This statue of Neptune is a 19th-century replica, with the original housed in the National Museum. However, when the fountain was completed, it was not well received by the citizens of Florence, who mockingly referred to it as “the White Giant.” People also ridiculed the sculptor, saying, “How much marble did you waste!”

Today, the Fountain of Neptune has become an indispensable part of Piazza della Signoria and one of the most popular spots for visitors to take photos.
