Palazzo Strozzi

Palazzo Strozzi is situated in Florence, Italy. It is a large-scale palace that was first built in 1489 and stands as one of the city's most famous structures, making it an essential destination for visitors to Florence.

Designed by Benedetto da Maiano, Palazzo Strozzi was commissioned by the banker Filippo Strozzi the Elder, who was a rival of the Medici family. Filippo Strozzi returned to Florence in November 1466 with the ambition to construct the most magnificent residence possible to uphold his family’s prestige and, more importantly, as a political statement of their status. To build the palace and ensure it had ample space, numerous buildings were acquired and demolished. Unfortunately, Filippo Strozzi passed away in 1491, but the construction of the palace continued for many years and was only completed in 1538. In that same year, Grand Duke Cosimo I confiscated the building, and it was not returned to the Strozzi family until 30 years later.

A prime example of civil architecture, Palazzo Strozzi is characterized by its roughly hewn stone blocks, which further emphasize this aspect. It features mullioned windows and, from a modern perspective, exudes timeless classical beauty.
