Piazzale Michelangelo

Piazzale Michelangelo is located on a hill in the Oltrarno district, south of the Arno River and the city center of Florence, Italy. It is the most famous spot in Florence offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. This highly popular tourist destination attracts countless visitors and has been featured in numerous postcards.

Piazzale Michelangelo was designed by architect Giuseppe Poggi and built in 1869 to commemorate the great Renaissance artist Michelangelo. The square is adorned with replicas of some of Michelangelo’s most famous works in Florence, such as the bronze David statue in the center of the square and the allegories from the Medici Chapel in the Basilica of San Lorenzo. These replicas are all made of bronze, while the originals are in white marble. Poggi also designed the neoclassical-style loggia that dominates the square, which now houses a panoramic restaurant. An inscription on the wall of the balcony beneath the loggia reads: “Florentine architect Giuseppe Poggi, this is his monument.”

From Piazzale Michelangelo, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Florence, including Forte Belvedere, the Basilica of Santa Croce, the Arno River with its sequence of Florence bridges—especially the Ponte Vecchio—as well as the Cathedral, Palazzo Vecchio, the Bargello Museum, and the octagonal tower, among others.
