Church of the Redeemer

The Church of the Redeemer is a massive domed church on Venice’s Giudecca Island, adjacent to the Giudecca Canal, dominating the island’s skyline. Each year, the Doge of Venice and senators would cross a specially built pontoon bridge from Zattere to Giudecca to attend mass at the church. The Feast of the Redeemer is a major Venetian festival, celebrated on the third Sunday in July. The evening before features a grand fireworks display, followed by—crossing the pontoon bridge. The church has long been entrusted to the Capuchin friars, with around 20 residing in the attached monastery.

The Church of the Redeemer is one of Palladio’s most outstanding works and is considered the pinnacle of his career. It is a grand white-domed structure topped with a statue of the Redeemer. A larger and lower statue is also placed on the central pediment of the façade. This design is reminiscent of Palladio’s Church of San Francesco della Vigna, and over the following two centuries, other architects repeatedly echoed this design.

Of course, the building is not strictly classical in the narrow sense. As a pilgrimage church, it was designed with a long nave, which posed a challenge for Palladio, who worked primarily in the classical style. The result is an somewhat eclectic structure: white exterior stucco, gray stone interiors, a cruciform space beneath the dome, and uninterrupted Corinthian columns throughout the interior—absolutely stunning.
