Spire Bridge

Spire Bridge is located in the Italian water city of Venice. It is one of the two bridges over the Cannaregio Canal in Venice, situated precisely at the point where the Cannaregio Canal flows into the Grand Canal. It lies at the western end of the Grand Canal, near the well-known Santa Lucia Railway Station.

The Spire Bridge was originally a wooden structure built in 1285, but it was later rebuilt in 1580 using stone and brick, forming the bridge we see today. Over the centuries, the bridge underwent multiple restorations—in 1641 and 1677—and was then completely reconstructed in 1823. During this reconstruction, two tall white spires were added at either end of the bridge. Further restoration work took place in 1987, adding iron railings, stone steps, and accessibility features for people with disabilities.

The white spires are located at both ends of the bridge, with four in total at the corners. Decorative white railings line both sides of the bridge, while carved demonic figureheads flank the arches, making them highly eye-catching. The body of the bridge is a brick-red color, creating a harmonious contrast with the white. As it is the only bridge in Venice adorned with spires, it has come to be known as the “Spire Bridge.” Walking across the Spire Bridge from Piazza Roma or the Santa Lucia Railway Station leads you to the Venice Jewish Ghetto.
