Burano Island is also known as the "Colorful Island" because it is a vibrant, multicolored small island located on the Venetian Lagoon in Italy. Though not very large, Burano is famous for its colorful buildings, with houses painted in a rainbow of hues, making it well worth a visit.

There are two theories about why the houses on Burano Island are so colorful. One is that painting the houses bright colors helped fishermen spot their homes from afar out at sea. Another is that residents used colors to distinguish their homes so they wouldn’t get lost or enter the wrong one after drinking. At some point, the local government mandated that residents repaint the exterior of their houses once a year. As a result, locals painted their quaint little homes in a wide array of vivid colors according to their personal tastes. These colorful houses stand side by side, forming rainbow-like alleyways that wind along the clear canals, while equally bright little boats rest quietly by the water’s edge. Strolling through the vibrant alleys, you’ll find flower pots or ornaments adorning nearly every windowsill, giving the impression of stepping into a fairytale world straight out of a storybook — filled with warmth and romance.

Burano Island is world-renowned for its lace weaving, and making and selling lace is a major source of income for the island’s residents. The lace produced here is all handmade, ranging from coasters and tablecloths to ornaments and even baby bibs. There is a wide variety of lace goods that are both high-quality and affordable.
