Murano Island

Murano Island is an island in the Venetian Lagoon of Italy. Though nominally one island, it is actually a cluster of islands connected by bridges, appearing as a single island. Murano is world-renowned for producing colorful Murano glassware, especially filigree glass, and is hailed as the "Glass Island of Venice."

In the early 16th century, Murano's glassmakers invented a method to produce brightly colored glass from originally colorless and transparent material, using specific formulas. The most famous of these is the renowned Murano ruby red glass. Additionally, there are crystal glass, enamel glass, gold thread glass, gold-red mixed spiral glass, multicolored glass, opaque white glass, and imitation gemstone glass. The glass manufacturing industry of Murano dominated Europe for centuries. Today, visiting Murano glass factories and watching glassblowers create glassware on-site has become an essential experience for first-time visitors to Venice. Murano glass paperweights, in particular, are highly favored as gifts and collectibles. Since the 1990s, Murano's colored glass products have expanded beyond Venice and are sold worldwide. Upscale jewelry stores in major global cities often display an array of Murano glass items, and some cities even have large specialty Murano glass shops.

Murano glass has a glorious history, so the Palazzo Giustinian on Murano Island houses a dedicated "Murano Glass Museum" that showcases the history of glassmaking and a variety of glassware from ancient Egypt to the present day.
