Vesoul

Vesoul is a commune in eastern France, the capital of the Haute-Saône department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, and the seventh-largest city in the region. It is located on the banks of the Durgeon River, a left tributary of the upper Saône, about 48 kilometers from Besançon. The city is also known for being the birthplace of many notable figures, including the history painter Jean-Léon Gérôme.

Vesoul boasts numerous historic sites, such as a 17th-century monastery, the magnificent St. George’s Church, and a synagogue. The Musée Georges-Garret and the Vesoul Municipal Museum house not only Gallo-Roman steles and tombstones but also paintings and sculptures created by local artists. The old town, with its 15th, 16th, and 18th-century architecture, the stunning church atop Mont-Motel, the unique Vesoul wines, and the beautiful Vesoul Lake are all well worth visiting. The annual Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema, one of the earliest Asian film festivals in Europe, attracts movie enthusiasts from around the world.
