Caen Castle

Caen Castle is located in the region of Caen in Lower Normandy, France. It is a vast ancient fortress that has been classified as a French historical monument since 1886.

Caen Castle was built in 1060 by William the Conqueror, who conquered England in 1066. The castle sustained damage during both the Hundred Years' War and World War II. In 1946, excavations by an archaeologist reignited the glory of this medieval fortress. In 1967, the Caen Museum of Fine Arts was established here and opened to the public in 1971.

Built on a small hill, now situated in the center of Caen, the castle spans an area of 5.5 hectares, making it one of the largest castles in Western Europe. It still retains the fundamental characteristics of a strategic Norman fortress. Today, the site houses the Caen Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Normandy—which regularly hosts art and history exhibitions related to the castle—the Church of Saint George, the Treasury of Normandy (a temporary exhibition hall), and a medieval-style garden.

As a grand ancient fortress, Caen Castle is surrounded by a moat. The castle’s keep has been razed, leaving only a central square flanked by two circular towers. From the castle walls, you can enjoy panoramic views of the city of Caen. Most of the walls were built in the 15th century, with some sections dating back to the 12th century. In 2004, the city of Caen carried out extensive restoration work on the ramparts.
