Caen is one of France’s major port cities, with the Orne River flowing through it. Its most famous landmark is Caen Castle, built in 1060 by William the Conqueror and one of the largest medieval castles in Western Europe. From the castle, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the city. Designated as a French Historical Monument since 1886, the castle now houses the Caen Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Normandy. The Abbey of Saint-Étienne (Men’s Abbey) is a former abbey church in Caen and, along with the nearby Abbey of Sainte-Trinité (Women’s Abbey), is considered one of the most representative examples of Norman Romanesque architecture. The Caen Botanical Garden is home to over 8,000 plant species, including many native to Normandy. The Caen Memorial is both a museum and a war memorial dedicated to World War II and the Battle of Caen, vividly recreating the dramatic and moving events of the wartime period.

Caen is a famous culinary destination in France, best known for its Tripe de Caen (Caen-style tripe), which has been inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Compared to the tripe from southern France’s Aveyron region, Caen tripe has a milder flavor and is served in hearty portions, making it a satisfying meal for diners.
