Bayeux

Bayeux is a commune in the Calvados department of the Lower Normandy region in northwestern France, located about 7 kilometers from the coast of the English Channel and approximately 30 kilometers northwest of Caen. The town was established in the 1st century AD after the Romans conquered Gaul and served as the capital of the Bessin region.

Bayeux is renowned for the Bayeux Tapestry, also known as Queen Matilda’s Tapestry. Measuring 70 meters long and half a meter wide, with 62 meters still preserved, it was created in the 11th century and depicts the events leading up to and including the Battle of Hastings, including the appearance of Halley's Comet in the sky in April 1066. The tapestry is now displayed in a museum in the town center, attracting numerous visitors. Bayeux Cathedral is a Norman Romanesque-Gothic structure built in 1077 and is said to be the location where the tapestry depicting the Battle of Hastings was first displayed.

The Jardin botanique de Bayeux (Bayeux Botanical Garden), dating back to 1864, is both a botanical garden and a municipal park, with many of its plants having been planted between 1859 and 1864. In addition, you can visit museums commemorating World War II and explore the town’s ancient streets, as well as dine at a variety of restaurants.
