Engineer Vauban's Fortress Architecture

Vauban's fortifications consist of 13 groups of defensive structures and facilities, deployed along the western, northern, and eastern borders of France. They are masterpieces of the exceptional designs by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633–1707), a military engineer during the reign of Louis XIV.

This series of structures includes towns built from scratch by Vauban, castles constructed on plains, citadel walls within cities, defensive towers, and residential areas. In addition, there are mountain fortresses, maritime fortifications, mountain artillery batteries, and mountain communication facilities. This site represents the pinnacle of classical defensive architecture in Western military construction. Vauban played an extremely important role in the development of fortifications across Europe, as well as in the Americas, Russia, and East Asia.
