Béthune

Béthune is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. It is also the sub-prefecture of the department, located about 73 km southeast of Calais, 33 km west of Lille, and 186 km north of Paris. The famous philosopher Jean Buridan was born here.

Béthune is a city with a long history and rich heritage. Among its many historic landmarks, the most famous is the Grand Place, surrounded by numerous restaurants, cafés, and beautifully decorated shops. The 47-meter-high Belfry has stood at the center of the square since 1346, its imposing presence visible from the Belgian border, and its chimes are produced by 66 bells. In addition, visitors can enjoy shopping on the bustling commercial streets, explore beautiful parks and tranquil forests through cycling or hiking, or visit temporary exhibitions to learn about the area’s art and history.
