Calais

Calais is a city and major port in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of northern France, as well as the sub-prefecture of the department. Located about 288 kilometers north of Paris and near the English town of Dover, it was originally a fishing village but has since developed into the largest city in the department. The narrowest part of the English Channel, the Strait of Dover–Calais, is just 34 kilometers wide.

Calais is a highly worthwhile city to visit. The Place d'Armes is one of the city's largest squares and a bustling marketplace. The Flemish Renaissance-style town hall and the towering Notre-Dame Church are among the most striking landmarks. The town hall's belfry is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while Notre-Dame Church, dating back to the 13th century, features a blend of Flemish, Gothic, Anglo-Saxon, and Tudor architectural styles.

Calais is also a city rich in cultural heritage. The art museum, WWII museum, and International City of Lace and Fashion Museum are key destinations for exploring history, art, and fashion. The municipal theater and cultural center regularly host major performances. In addition, the many towers, medieval fortresses, historical monuments, lighthouses, and vibrant nightlife are not to be missed.
