Introduction: The Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde is the symbol of Marseille. It stands atop a hill 150 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of the entire city and the Mediterranean Sea — a truly spectacular sight. Above the main structure of the basilica sits a 9.7-meter-tall, gold-plated statue of the Virgin Mary. It is said that this gleaming statue can be seen from almost any point in Marseille, making the basilica an iconic landmark of the city.

Upon entering through the church's main gate, you’ll first come across the monks’ residence, where around 30 monks live. These monks devote their lives to religious practice here, beginning their first prayer at 2 a.m. every day and returning to the residence for evening prayers in the afternoon. Descend via the eastern staircase to enter the church interior, where you’ll find numerous model ships offered for safe voyages. The walls also bear bullet marks from gunfire exchanged between German forces and the Allies during World War II.

Friendly Tip: The basilica is located on a high point with many stone steps. Climbing up to the second level will lead you to a restroom. If you prefer not to climb the stairs, you can also take an escalator up to the church entrance. Transportation: From the Quai de Rive Neuve at the Old Port, turn left and walk uphill along the ramp for about 20 minutes to reach the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde.
