Promenade des Anglais

The Promenade des Anglais, meaning "the Englishmen's walk," is a famous seaside promenade along the azure Mediterranean coast in Nice, a city in southeastern France.

Before the urbanization of Nice, the city’s coastline was just a barren beach covered with large pebbles. The first houses were built on the high ground near the sea. From the second half of the 18th century, the British began coming to Nice for the winter to treat their lung conditions and enjoy the panoramic views of the coast. One particularly harsh winter saw a large influx of beggars from the north to Nice, prompting some wealthy Britons to propose a useful project for them: building a pedestrian walkway along the coast. The prospect of this comfortable promenade in Nice sparked public interest and significantly increased job opportunities. The walkway was originally referred to in the local Niçard dialect as "Chemin des Anglais" (English Road). In 1860, when Nice was annexed into France, the street was renamed Promenade des Anglais in French.

Locals simply call the Promenade des Anglais "the Promenade." On Sundays, many cyclists and families can be seen strolling along the path. It is also a favorite spot for skateboarders and rollerbladers. A variety of events take place here, such as the Nice Carnival and the Battle of Flowers. The Promenade is equipped with blue chairs and charming little pavilions where visitors can relax, enjoy the laid-back Mediterranean lifestyle, and admire the deep blue waters.
