Corcovado Mountain

Introduction

Corcovado Mountain (also known as Hunchback Mountain or Christ the Redeemer Mountain) stands at 710 meters high and is located within the Tijuca National Park in Rio de Janeiro. The mountain is covered with ancient trees that remain lush all year round. The first nickname of Corcovado Mountain comes from its shape resembling the hump of a hunchbacked person; the second nickname is due to the towering statue of Jesus with arms outstretched in the shape of a cross at the mountaintop, hence also known as Christ the Redeemer Mountain. The massive statue of Jesus can be seen from every corner of the city and is one of the iconic symbols of Rio.

The statue was built in 1931, stands 30 meters tall (equivalent to a 13-story building), and weighs 1,145 tons. Its head alone is 3.75 meters high and weighs 30 tons; the distance between the fingertips of the outstretched hands is 28 meters; the area of the arms is about 38 square meters and weighs 114 tons; the base of the statue covers an area of 100 square meters. There are roads and a mountain railway that lead directly to the summit. On clear days, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the entire city of Rio and the surrounding beaches.
