McCord Museum

The McCord Museum is located in Montreal, Quebec, adjacent to McGill University. It is a public research and educational museum founded in 1921, dedicated to studying, promoting Canadian history, and collecting and preserving a rich diversity of heritage.

The McCord Museum was founded by David Ross McCord, based on his family collection, with the goal of showcasing both the past and present of Canada, and presenting its history and way of life to the public. The museum houses a collection of 1,440,000 photographs, objects, and manuscripts that reflect the history of Canada, Quebec, and the city of Montreal. The collections are divided into six main categories: ethnology and archaeology (15,800 items), costumes and textiles (18,845 items), photographic works (1,300,000 images), textual archives (262 collections), paintings, prints, and drawings (69,000 items), and decorative arts (38,900 items).

The costume and textile collection is particularly remarkable, showcasing the ingenuity of various Canadian communities. The collection includes women’s and men’s clothing, umbrellas, hats, footwear, accessories, and more, many of which were created by renowned Montreal designers of the 20th century. Additionally, there are embroidered patterns, quilts, and even the oldest known patchwork quilt in North America held in the museum.
