In the late 19th century, a man named George Grant Mackay discovered this place and settled here with his wife. Later, with the help of local Indigenous people, they began constructing a bridge. Initially, they used rough hemp ropes and cedar planks as building materials, and it was renovated again in 1914 with the addition of concrete to reinforce both ends. Introduction: The renowned Capilano Suspension Bridge and Park in North Vancouver is one of Vancouver’s oldest tourist attractions. This one of the world’s most impressive suspension bridges stretches 137 meters (450 feet) and has been suspended 70 meters (230 feet) above the Capilano River for over 100 years using two thick hemp ropes and cedar planks. The park also features totem poles carved and placed here by Indigenous people 60 years ago. They are vividly colored, eye-catching, and have retained their shapes and colors remarkably well. Beside the totem poles is a historical display area where you can view historic photos of the bridge's construction, accompanied by recorded stories. Nearby, there is also a souvenir shop where you can purchase postcards and Indigenous-themed memorabilia. In the adjacent carving cabin, visitors can watch artisans demonstrate their woodcarving skills. Walking across the 70-meter-high suspension bridge, with the Capilano River valley below, is a thrilling experience. But once you cross to the other side, you’ll be greeted with fresh air and towering ancient trees, offering a completely different scene.
