Introduction

In 1867, a man nicknamed “Gassy” Jack Deighton arrived in Vancouver and built a wooden saloon in Gastown—this became the city’s first hotel. In 1971, the British Columbia government designated Gastown as a heritage conservation area. Today, Gastown retains its historic charm with Victorian-era architecture, cobblestone streets, outdoor cafés, as well as antique shops, boutiques, and restaurants. One of the unique sights in Gastown is the world-famous Steam Clock, which emits steam every 15 minutes. Cordova Street is lined with a variety of small shops, where you can also explore Canadian Indigenous culture.
