Vancouver Art Gallery

The Vancouver Art Gallery is located in downtown Vancouver. This Greek temple-style classical building is one of Vancouver’s renowned historical landmarks and is itself an extraordinary work of art. Originally built as the Vancouver Courthouse, it was converted into an art gallery in 1911. The gallery has four floors and mainly features works by famous Canadian and British Columbia artists, including those by the highly revered Canadian artist Emily Carr. Her works hold a significant place in the gallery’s collection, making the Vancouver Art Gallery the institution with the world’s largest collection of Carr’s paintings.

In addition to paintings, the gallery also showcases outstanding works in photography, sculpture, graphic arts, and public art. The four scaled-down ships installed around the top perimeter of the gallery’s exterior walls are public art pieces commissioned by the gallery in 2001 from Chinese-Canadian artist Ken Lum. As a prestigious art institution in Vancouver, the Vancouver Art Gallery regularly hosts internationally acclaimed art exhibitions, featuring works by outstanding artists from various regions. These often include exhibitions by Asian artists, reflecting Vancouver’s unique multicultural artistic atmosphere. Aside from exhibition halls, the gallery also houses a reading-only library, a gift shop, and a self-serve café.
