Vancouver's Chinatown

Vancouver's Chinatown is the largest Chinese enclave in North America after San Francisco's Chinatown and also the most bustling and beautiful one on the continent. With a history of about a hundred years, it spans approximately six city blocks. Chinese immigrants first arrived on Canada’s West Coast back in 1858, and since then, they have put down roots here, flourishing and promoting Chinese culture.

The Millennium Gate is one of the iconic landmarks of Vancouver's Chinatown. Upon entering, you’ll find the streets clean and spacious, with buildings and lampposts predominantly painted in red — an overall festive atmosphere that gives visitors the illusion of being in China. One can’t help but admire the Chinese diaspora who have built a warm community in a foreign land. Chinese characters adorn various signs, evoking memories of the square-shaped characters practiced in childhood. The streets are lined with a variety of Chinese restaurants offering diverse cuisines, as well as shops selling traditional Chinese crafts. You’ll also find herbal medicine stores, butcher shops, fishmongers, vegetable stalls, dried seafood shops, cha chaan tengs (Hong Kong-style diners), herbal shops, and grocery stores — all popular among overseas Chinese for their daily shopping needs.

In Vancouver's Chinatown, you can also find Chinese pottery, tea, embroidery, and gemstones. During the Lunar New Year, lion and dragon dances are performed, attracting both local and international visitors.
