Burrard Bridge

Burrard Bridge is a truss bridge in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, spanning the western end of False Creek and connecting Downtown Vancouver with the Kitsilano district. The bridge currently has five vehicle lanes running along both sides of Burrard Street and features dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths on either side of the traffic lanes. Its Art Deco style makes it one of Vancouver's major landmarks.

Construction on the Burrard Bridge project began on December 8, 1930, and the upper vehicle lanes opened to traffic on July 1, 1932. The city had originally intended to use funding from 0 to build a lower-level railway passage, but 0 never provided the funds, causing the plan to be abandoned. The bridge connects Burrard Street on the north shore of False Creek with Cedar Street on the south shore, and in 1938, the city renamed Cedar Street to Burrard Street. On May 7, 2009, Vancouver City Council approved a plan to convert the southbound slow lane into a dedicated southbound bicycle lane, the northbound pedestrian and bicycle path into a dedicated northbound bicycle lane, and the southbound pedestrian and bicycle path into a two-way pedestrian-only path; as a result, southbound vehicle traffic was reduced from three lanes to two. Two weeks after the changes were implemented, the city reported a roughly 30% increase in bicycle traffic on the bridge, with a slight decrease in car traffic.
