Parliament Hill

Parliament Hill is situated on the south bank of the Ottawa River, overlooking the river. It houses Canada’s Parliament and is a national symbol, drawing three million visitors each year and ranking as Ottawa’s most eye-catching site. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it functioned as a military base and developed into a government office location in 1859.

Parliament Hill consists of three Victorian Gothic buildings and a large green square, all perched on a cliff. These grand and solemn sandstone Gothic structures currently house the Canadian government and Senate. With a history of approximately 140 years, they are divided into the Centre Block, East Block, and West Block. The tallest structure on Parliament Hill is the 90-metre-high Peace Tower, which features a carillon of 53 bells and contains the Book of Remembrance honoring Canadian soldiers who died in the two World Wars. Inscribing their names here serves as a reminder that the people remember them and have not forgotten their sacrifices.
