Qasr Amra

Introduction Qasr Amra is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the most magnificent of the desert castles in eastern Jordan, built in the early 8th century. As a caliphal retreat, Qasr Amra was not only guarded by defensive fortifications but also featured vibrant, lush gardens irrigated by water drawn from 15 meters underground. Despite being located in the heart of the desert, its inhabitants lived a leisurely and refined lifestyle akin to that of European nobility. The interior of Qasr Amra still preserves a large number of exquisitely detailed frescoes, depicting figures and animals such as triumphant warriors, embracing lovers, and lions chasing white horses—images that are very rare in Arabic art. Transportation It is located 90 kilometers east of Amman.
